Alison Borland, born in Glasgow on 12th June 1928, was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. Her father, Kenneth, was a sheriff in Campbeltown, where Alison attended the Grammar school. After the family moved to Glasgow she was a pupil at the Park School for girls. In 1947 she began her studies in the Law Faculty, progressed smoothly and graduated B.L. in 1950. The following year she was admitted as a solicitor, having also successfully completed a three year apprenticeship. She married John Mollison Birrell in 1958. The couple made their home in Bearsden. By 1960 she had not renewed her practising certificate but had retained membership of the Society of Law Agents. What happened in her working life after that is still to be documented. Alison Borland died, aged 80, in 2008.
