Elizabeth Stanton, one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow, was born in Belfast on 1st November 1919. After attending St.Brides School in Helensburgh, a private school for girls, founded in 1895 with a strong priority to equip girls for higher education, she went on to study at the University of St Andrews, graduating M.A. in 1941. During the war she served in the W.A.A.F.s though in 1946 the Faculty turned down her application for war service concessions to the curriculum on the grounds that her service was not long enough. Her student record shows that she was in no need of concession on grounds of academic ability though it could have been useful to save time while an apprenticeship had to be undertaken too. She gained a Distinction in Scots Law, graduating LL.B.in 1949. Her family home was in Helensburgh where her father Robert was a solicitor, later Honorary Sheriff Substitute in Dumbarton, and it was there that she went into professional practice after her admission as a solicitor in 1949. She enjoyed a lifetime career in the family firm of Ormond & Stanton which became Maclachlan, Stanton & Co. She died in Helensburgh in 2014, aged 95.
