85 - Dorothy Margaret McCulloch Ure

BL 1948

Dorothy Ure, the daughter of Gertrude and William Ure, was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. She was born in Glasgow on 19th August 1912. Aged  eight in 1921, she is recorded in the census of that year living with her family- parents, two brothers and a servant– in Sannox Drive, Bishopbriggs. Her father was a sales director with Boyd and Co., food producers. He died in 1931, just after Dorothy had begun her studies in the Faculty of Arts and she abandoned her studies. She returned to the university in 1946, this time to study law and was perhaps part of that fresh start that led young people back to the classroom after the war. A letter from the Faculty dated 30th April 1946 informed her that she was entitled to the benefit of concessions to the curriculum in respect of war service, though in fact she studied the full range of subjects and passed with ease.  She graduated BL in 1948 and, with an apprenticeship behind her, was admitted as a solicitor in 1949. The following year she married John Tennent and the couple settled in Gourock.  She was able to continue her career, practising in the firm of D & J Hill. Dorothy Ure died in 1989, aged 77.
