84 - Christabel McCaskill

MA; LLB 1948

Christabel Macaskill was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. She was born on 26 October 1922. Her father, Allan, was a Perthshire farmer and Christabel’s family home was at Tullich, Killin. When she went up to Glasgow to study Law in 1941 she found lodgings in Glasgow Street, Hillhead. By 1943 she had taken classes in Jurisprudence, Public International Law, Forensic Medicine and the Law of Scotland. Then there was a gap until 1947, a not uncommon interruption in the lives of students in wartime. When she returned to complete her degree, graduating BL in 1948, it was with more confident exam results and in 1949, having also served an apprenticeship in a law firm, she was admitted as a solicitor. She is listed as in practice in Killin in 1952. In that year she married Thomas Douglas Watt. And moved to Glasgow, to live in Bearsden. More remains to be discovered about her professional life. She renewed her practising certificate up to the mid 1950s but does not seem to have continued after that, though she continued membership of the Law Society. She died in 2014, aged 91.
