Mary Hutchison was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. She was born in Glasgow on 7th September 1903. Her parents, Rosina and David, who was a journeyman iron turner, lived in Gourlay Street in the St.Rollox area. By the time of the 1921 census the family was living in Chrichton Street, not far from where she was born. She was the eldest of four children and had three brothers. Her father was working as an engineer for the Caledonian Railway and many of their neighbours were also employed in the making and maintenance of railway equipment. Mary had two periods of study at the university. From 1921 to 1924 she was a student in the Arts Faculty, graduating MA in 1924. She became a teacher. After a gap of twenty years, however, she returned to university. In the session 1943-4 she matriculated to study for the Diploma in Public Administration (DPA) but went on to take a degree in Law. Her father had died by then. She took the classes of Civil and Mercantile Law in the session 1944-45 and after getting used to exams again and probably gaining experience as a law apprentice at the same time, she completed the curriculum quite smoothly and graduated LLB in 1947. Details of her career thereafter remain to be added. Mary Hutchison died, aged 90 in 1994.
