Winifred was born in Glasgow in 1902 to Georgina and James Younger. Her father was a solicitor. At the time of the census in 1911 the family was living in Shettleston. Winifred was the eldest child, aged 9, with a six year old sister Annie and an eight month old brother John. She began her studies in the Law Faculty in 1923, in all likelihood working in a law office while studying and sitting her exams. She graduated B.L. in 1925. Winifred was a very good student as evidenced by the award of a first class certificate in Civil Law and Forensic Medicine, 5th place in Evidence and Procedure, 2nd prize in International Private law and 4th place in Mercantile Law. She completed her apprenticeship and satisfied all the entrance requirements to the profession. In doing so Winifred was only the fifth woman law graduate from Glasgow to become a practitioner, her chances of doing so enhanced by remaining unmarried and being the daughter of a solicitor. She remained a member of the Society of Law Agents into the early 1960’s. She died in Newington in 1982, aged 79.
