Margaret Birch, one of the first hundred women to graduate in law from the University of Glasgow, was born in Crewe, Cheshire on 5th April 1924 to Margaret Ellen (nee Hughes) and John Birch. Her father was a civil servant who became an Inspector in the Department of Transport. The family home was in Hyndland when Margaret was a student. She began her studies in the session 1942-43 and seemed to progress effortlessly through the curriculum, passing all subject at the first diet and gaining a Faculty of Procurators prize in Conveyancing and a first class certificate in Mercantile Law. She graduated B.L. in 1945, having also served an apprenticeship and she was admitted as a solicitor the same year. Her mother had died by the time of her marriage to Samuel Stinson, a Physiotherapy student, on 2nd August 1947.
