Her father, John, was a medical practitioner and when she was a student at Glasgow the family home was in Uddingston. She had an excellent record. On her route to graduating M.A. in 1942 she took a 5th place in Logic and went on to gain a Distinction in Constitutional Law, a Merit in Evidence and Procedure, second prize in Conveyancing and the Guthrie Prize in International Private Law. She graduated LL.B. in 1945. Florence had served an apprenticeship with a law firm and completed all remaining qualifications as a solicitor, admitted in 1948. In 1950 she married Robert John Cuthbert, a Glasgow medical graduate. Her career after marriage remains to be documented.
