Margaret Isla McFadyen, born in Glasgow on 19th July 1921, was one of the first hundred graduates in Law from the University of Glasgow. Her father, Alexander Russell McFadyen was a solicitor. The family home was in Kensington Gate. Margaret began her higher education at the University of St. Andrews from which she graduated M.A. before matriculating in Law at Glasgow in 1941. She was a very successful student, passing all degree exams first time and gaining second place rankings in Jurisprudence, Conveyancing and Mercantile Law as well as a Distinction in Scots Law. She graduated LL.B. in 1944. Having served an apprenticeship as a law clerk she continued to pursue a legal career although, it seems, without petitioning for admission to the roll of solicitors. She married James Barclay MacKinnon in 1953. They made their home in Bearsden and had a family of two. Known as Isla she died, aged 93 on 26th November 2014.
