Isobel Caufield, one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow, was born in the city on 1st October 1924 to Grace (Byrne) and Bernard Caufield. She was a solicitor’s daughter. Bernard was a partner in Caufield and McGowan with offices at 30 George Square. Isobel set out along the same path. She began her studies in 1941, enrolling in the classes of Forensic Medicine and Law of Scotland. After a settling-in year she made steady progress and graduated BL in 1944, probably having served or about to complete an apprenticeship. Her’s was a ‘legal’ family. Her brother Andrew became a solicitor and Isobel worked as a law clerk after graduation, though not up to the point of petitioning the Court for admission as a solicitor. On 16th June when she married Francis Kieran, a spirit merchant and brother of Patricia Kieran (BL 1945). Isobel’s occupation at that time was as an Examiner in the Estate Duty Office, predecessor of HMRC. Details of her career after that have still to emerge. She died in Glasgow in 2009, aged 84.
