Marie Elizabeth Rose was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. Born on 4th October 1920 in Dyke, Morayshire, she was the daughter of Annie Reid Murray and James Jolly Rose. Her father was the minister of the United Free Church in Dykes. Marie matriculated in 1940 and enrolled in the classes of Public International Law, Forensic Medicine and Civil Law. She would also have arranged an apprenticeship, usually to run concurrently with academic study. In 1944 she graduated B.L. after a few tussles with degree exams. She continued to pursue a legal career and would in effect have been carrying out the work of a solicitor before successfully petitioning for admission to the solicitors’ roll in 1953.
