Helen Laughland, one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow, was born in Kilmarnock on 23rd September 1911. Her father, William, a wholesale stationer, died in 1933, the year in which Helen began her studies. She was a good student and gained first-time passes in all her subjects between 1933 and 1936 when she graduated B.L. Though Helen was on course to become a solicitor and in all probability worked as a law clerk until she married William McAdam in 1939 she did not complete the professional qualification by petitioning the Court of Session for admission to the roll. Her career history after marriage is not yet known. The couple lived in Bearsden. Helen died in Whithorn in 1986, aged 74.
