51- Flora Elizabeth Smith Renfrew

CA; LLB 1935

One of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow, Flora Renfrew’s stated destination on her matriculation records was to qualify as an accountant. She was born in Glasgow on 20th February 1906. Her father, Andrew, who died before she finished her education, had been a master farrier. Flora began studying for a B.L. in 1931 when she took classes in Public International Law, Law of Scotland, Mercantile Law and Accountancy. This last choice was quite rare and like law just as difficult to pursue as a career. The following year she added Forensic and Civil Law. Exam success did not come easily and had to be combined with the demands of apprenticeships. After graduating B.L.in 1935, however, she stuck to her chosen career in accountancy. The records of the University General Council in the post-war years find her living in Giffnock and her occupation listed as C.A. In 1955 she married Charles Douglas Allison. Flora died in 1995, aged 89, in Maybole.
