50- Margaret Hutcheson

BL 1935

Margaret Hutchison, one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow was, like many of that cohort, a lawyer’s daughter. She was born in Glasgow on 3rd May 1910. When she matriculated to begin an Arts degree in 1929 it was already clear that she intended to follow her father, David, into Law. She took classes in Civil Law and Constitutional Law as part of her Arts curriculum and after she graduated M.A. in 1932 she carried passes in these subjects into her B.L. Her progress in Law was marked by the highs and lows which were often shared by students juggling academic study with the office work of an apprenticeship. She graduated B.L. in 1935. She may have continued working as a law clerk without seeking the formality of admission to the profession as a solicitor in the years immediately after graduating, as many of the women and some men did. In 1939 she married James Thomson McCutcheon. She died in 1984.
