49- Bertha Mary Simpson

BL 1935

Bertha Simpson was among the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. She was born in 1905 in Liverpool where her father, William, was a warehouseman. When she matriculated in the Law Faculty in 1932 she was living in Mount Florida. She was an outstanding student and graduated B.L. with distinction in 1935. Along the way she won the Robert Ross prize in Scots Law, a distinction in Evidence and Procedure, and the prestigious Andrew Cunningham Bursary in Conveyancing. She would have served her apprenticeship and set out on what looked like a promising career in Law. After she married David Harvey, a solicitor, in 1937, however, details of her occupation outside marriage are omitted from the University’s General Council records, though they may remain to be discovered. She died in 1978, aged 73 in Perthshire.
