Anne Fullarton Fyfe was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow and the daughter of another, Mary Fullarton Fyfe (M.A. 1907, LL.B.1929). She was born in Glasgow on 13th February 1914. Her father, David, was a surgeon and the family home was at Clairmont Gardens. In 1931 she began her studies in the Faculty of Law and would also have registered with a law firm as an apprentice. She mostly had a good undergraduate record and sometimes an excellent one, achieving a mention as deserving of Honours in Scots Law and a first class distinction in International Public Law. She graduated B.L.in 1934. It may be that she did try to make her way in Law but a few years later she had changed direction. She followed her father into Medicine and after graduating MB.Ch.B. (Glasgow 1943) became a G.P. in Glasgow. In 1944 she married Reginald Basil Baldwin, whose occupation was described at the time of marriage as ‘holder of stocks and shares’, possibly the equivalent of a stockbroker. The couple’s home was in Buckinghamshire. They had two children. It remained difficult for women with a family to sustain a career and the details of Anne’s work outside the home have yet to emerge. She died in 1994, her husband in 1985.
