41- Agnes Lawrie Edgar

BL 1934

Agnes Edgar was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. She was born in Bannockburn on 7th July 1911. When she began her studies in the Faculty of Law the family was living at Castleview, Bannockburn and her father, Alexander, had retired from his work as a grocery merchant and agent for potatoes. Agnes seemed to have little difficulty in negotiating the business of passing academic exams with serving an apprenticeship. She graduated B.L. in April 1934. ‘Lawrie Edgar’ appears on the prizelist of 1932-3 as deserving of Honours in the Law of Scotland. She became Mrs Arthur Owens in 1941 when she married and thereafter shared the fate of all married graduate women in the records of the General Council in that she ceased to have an occupation other than her marital status. Though she didn’t complete formal registration as a solicitor in Scotland she would in all likeliehood have worked in a law practice until marriage took her south to live in England. She had four children. Agnes died in Banbury, Oxfordshire on 8th March 2010 at the age of 98.
