34- Jean Craig Young

BL 1932

Jean Young was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. She was born on 7th July 1902 in Edinburgh, where her father, James, was a solicitor. In 1924 she matriculated in the Faculty of Law and enrolled in the class of Forensic Medicine which she passed many years and quite a few resits later, in 1932. Her second year was also difficult, though in her third year, 1926-27, she passed International Private Law first time. Further efforts yielded a pass in Conveyancing and she graduated B.L. in 1932. Combining academic study with apprenticeship could be demanding. Law was evidently not where she was destined to be, however. Jean moved to Elgin, where the records of the General Council, relying on self-reporting and rarely updated, list her occupation as school housekeeper. She died in Elgin, aged 99.
