24- Georgina Corrie McGregor

MA; LLB 1930

Georgina McGregor, one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow, was born in Carmunnock in 1911. Her father, William, was a commercial traveller. As a student in the Faculty of Arts (M.A. 1928) she signalled her intention to integrate Law and Arts and carried forward passes in Civil Law and Constitutional Law and History to her LL.B. curriculum. She was a good student. , earning a second place in Mercantile Law, a first class certificate in Public International Law and a second class certificate in Jurisprudence. Georgina graduated LL.B. in 1930 and as a postgraduate added a pass in Conveyancing. Further evidence of her intellectual capabilities came when she was awarded the R.W. Robertson postgraduate scholarship in Law in May 1931. After reporting back to the Faculty on her use of its funding a year later, it was renewed for a further year. She would have been eminently employable on completion of such strong academic qualifications and a vocational apprenticeship in a law firm. As yet, however, the details of her career remain to be discovered and she doesn’t appear to have applied for admission to the roll of solicitors. Georgina died in 1998, aged 92.
