23- Isabel Pinkerton Tindal

MA; BL; LLB 1930; 1931

Isabel Tindal was one of the first 100 women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. Born in Cathcart on 2nd January 1906 she was the daughter of Elizabeth and Andrew, a medical practitioner. Her university curriculum was meticulously designed to integrate Arts and Law in a manner more than likely to lead to a career in the legal profession. On the road to graduating M.A. in 1928 she gained a merit certificate in Constitutional Law and History, took second place in Forensic Medicine and passed Law of Scotland. Integrating an apprenticeship with continued studies in the Faculty of Law she completed a B.L. in 1930. That was also the year of her marriage to Donald John McDiarmid of Dunoon. She was twenty-four and not quite finished with the Law Faculty. In 1931 she graduated LL.B. It seemed she was serious about a career. Whatever form that took, if any, it did not include proceeding to formal professional qualification as a law agent (solicitor) in Scotland. The couple set up home at Osborne Lodge, Dunoon. Isabel died in Edinburgh in 1995, aged 89.
