Evelyn MacRae was one of the first 100 women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. Her family came from Portree where she was born on 28th January 1907. She was the youngest of three daughters and the 1921 census finds them living in Somerled Square, Portree, where her father was Sheriff Clerk Depute. Prior to beginning her studies in the Faculty of Law she completed an M.A. from Glasgow and graduated in 1926. Her name appeared on the prize-list in the Higher Ordinary class of Italian. The following year she matriculated in Law. Her academic record was good and she graduated LL.B in April 1930. General Council records locate her in Liverpool in the 1940s. Her occupation is listed as a secretary, a designation that does not preclude a continued career within the legal profession. She died in the Tarbert area in 1996, aged 89.
