Isabel Jean Milligan was the daughter of a Dalbeattie solicitor, John Edwin Milligan and his wife Isabella. She was born in Dalbeattie in 1904. After graduating B.L. from Glasgow University in 1929 she continued to work as a law clerk and would in all probability have finished her apprenticeship by the time she married a lawyer, James Hunton Montieth Robertson, on 7th June 1931. She did not complete her own professional registration, however, to fully qualify as a solicitor. The University’s General Council did not gather information about the occupations of its women graduates after they married, though it did for men of any marital status. Isabel Milligan was a lawyer’s daughter and she married a lawyer. She may have given up her professional ambitions on marriage, as many women did or had to, but may have continued to work in the firm effectively doing the work of a solicitor. She died in Glasgow in 1981.
