102 - Hannah Risha Gold

MA; LLB 1951

Hannah Gold (nee Mellick) was one of the first hundred women to graduate in Law from the University of Glasgow. She was born on 22nd March 1913 at 23 Apsley Place Govan, the daughter of Jessie Malchatsky and Morris Mellick. Both her parents were born in Russia. At the time of the 1921 census Morris and Jessie were both working, he as an accountant and she as a fruiterer. Their four children had set out on the educational path that would take them all to Glasgow University and into the professions, Abraham, the eldest was a medical student, Joseph, Sarah and Hannah still at school. After Hannah left Queens Park Secondary School she matriculated in the Faculty of Arts, graduating M.A. in 1933. Three years later she returned to university and enrolled in two classes in the Law Faculty, Civil and Constitutional Law but did not proceed to take the degree exams. It seems likely that she was planning to qualify in the future. When she married Albert Hilary Gold in 1943 her occupation was described as a typist. Sadly she was widowed in 1947 when Albert was just twenty eight. She returned to university in 1948 to complete her legal education with a strong academic record in addition to the vocational qualifications that she acquired as an apprentice. In 1951 she graduated LL.B. and was admitted to the profession as a solicitor. Her brother Joseph Mellick was also a Glasgow law graduate and Hannah continued to be part of the firm he set up in 1928 at 120 Hope Street and in which she became a partner. She died, aged 83 in 1996.
